Durban Unisa Student Wins With Eduloan

20 Apr 2009

Says Klaas Mabetlela, Operations Manager at Eduloan: "This competition is certainly all about winners! Along with Elias, we consider UNISA a winner - for enabling so many students access to quality distance-education, no matter where they are. And we consider that Elias was a winner long before he won the Eduloan prize. He was a winner because he didn't just sit and wait for good things to happen to him - he proactively decided to further himself through education and he is where he is today because of his inner fire to be the best person he can be. ‘Luck' really has nothing to do with it - as Gary Player, world-famous golfer, once said: ‘The harder I practice, the luckier I become!'"

Elias, 42, works as a Public Relations Officer for the KZN Department of Health in Osindisweni Hospital, and is in his third year of a Public Relations Management Degree at UNISA. Says Elias: "I am so thrilled - this is the first time I have won such a wonderful prize! As a boy, my teacher used to tell me that I must seek education and all else will follow - and this has indeed been the case! I am deeply indebted to both Eduloan and UNISA for affording me the opportunity to study and to win this prize, and the money is going straight back into education!" Elias will use the funds to pay off both of the educational loans he currently has with Eduloan, as well as to buy necessary textbooks and to contribute to payment of his wife's Social Work Degree, which she is also completing through UNISA.

The ceremony was also proudly attended by Xolani Dubazane, Deputy Director of UNISA, who commended Elias for rising to the sometimes tough challenges presented by distance-education and also thanked Eduloan for its proactive stance on development and social upliftment via education.
